We worked for a German manufacturer of skidders and forwarders. The company develop and manufacture forestry machines based on a modular system that can be tailored to the needs of their customers. Wheel, transmission, crane, saw, grapple, cabin, tires, etc, are all independently constructed modules. Depending on the customer’s choice, the manufacturer then assembles the modules to fit the customer wishes.

Our client renewed the site’s identity and wishes to use the opportunity to redo the manuals in accordance with the new graphic charter of the site. He wanted a solution to reduce the translation time of a manual. The company was looking for a translator team who is able to work in close collaboration with their documentation department.

The documentation is divide in 3 main groups:

  • Parts Manuals. They contain detailed exploded views and part numbers of all serviced parts for the forestry machines. They give the information needed to quickly identify and order parts.
  • Operation & Maintenance Manuals. They contain important safety, operating, and scheduled maintenance information for the forestry machines.
  • Service manuals. They contain procedures for safely and effectively testing, adjusting, troubleshooting, disassembling and assembling forestry machines. Systems schematics and detailed technical descriptions of systems theory are also included in these manuals.

This document are available in English, German, Dutch, Spanish, Portugese, French, in print, CD, or PDF download.

We set up a team of 2 translators per language with experience in technical documentation. Each translator proofread each other work. This allow to optimize the proofreading time and push the quality of the translation forward. We propose to the client to use a cloud as communication interface between the translator team and the documentation department. The cloud offers tremendous advantages in managing complex projects.

  • It allows you to create an exact copy, by language, of all the contents used to make the manual (image, photo, technical drawing and text).
  • The translators are automatically notified about changes on the source documents.
  • The comments function allow to centralise all the communication between technical writers and translators.
